How to Identify Shadowless Pokémon Cards (Base Set): 6 Checks

Tell a Shadowless Base Set card from 1st Edition and Unlimited: drop shadow, text weight, Trainer copyright line, the Impostor Oak spelling and Machamp.

Quick answer: A Shadowless card is an English Base Set card with no 1st Edition stamp and no drop shadow along the right edge of the picture box. Shadowless was the second English print: after 1st Edition, before Unlimited. It kept the 1st Edition layout and dropped only the stamp (Bulbapedia, 1st Edition (TCG), accessed 2026-10-07).

The 6 checks

1. Is it English Base Set?

  • No set symbol under the right corner of the artwork. A card with a symbol belongs to a later set (Jungle, Fossil, Base Set 2 and so on).
  • Numbered out of /102. Base Set 2 reprints are numbered /130.
  • English text. Shadowless exists only in English. Every other language printed 1st Edition cards with the shadowed layout (Bulbapedia).

2. No 1st Edition stamp

  • Look below the lower-left corner of the artwork. A black “Edition 1” stamp means 1st Edition, not Shadowless. No stamp, go to check 3.

3. No drop shadow (Pokémon cards)

  • Look along the right edge and bottom of the picture box. Unlimited cards have a dark shadow line there, so the box looks raised. Shadowless and 1st Edition cards don’t.

4. Thinner text

  • Compare the HP number and attack text with a known Unlimited card. Shadowless text is noticeably thinner and lighter; Unlimited text is bolder (Bulbapedia).

Trainer and Energy cards have no picture box, so check 3 doesn’t work. Read the line at the bottom instead:

Two independent sources agree: Bulbapedia and Big Orbit Cards, accessed 2026-10-07. A few older guides say the opposite; we found no reliable source that supports them.

6. Card-specific tells

CardWhat to look forSource
#73 Imposter Professor Oak1st Edition and Shadowless prints are spelled “Impostor”. Unlimited and later prints say “Imposter”Bulbapedia
#8 MachampThe exception. The Machamp holo was sold in starter products, not booster packs, and the 2-Player Starter Set copies carry the 1st Edition stamp. Early copies are shadowless; later starter printings added the shadow. A stamped, shadowed English Machamp is normal. Later starter-product reprints complicate unstamped copies, so let a grader attribute any unstamped Machamp holoBulbapedia; Relentless Dragon
#58 PikachuRed cheeks appear on 1st Edition and Shadowless prints (and the E3 promo); Unlimited has yellow cheeks. A yellow-cheeks Shadowless card with a broken stamp outline (“E ITION”) is the “Ghost Stamp” errorBulbapedia, Error cards; Red Cheeks Pikachu
#12 NinetalesBulbapedia lists a Shadowless copy missing attack damage, which was corrected laterBulbapedia, Base Set
#18 Dragonair“Rainbow Smear”: a rainbow-like smudge over the “u” in “number” on 1st Edition and Shadowless printsBulbapedia, Error cards

Common mistakes

  • “No stamp = Shadowless.” Not on its own. Most unstamped cards are Unlimited. Check the shadow (or the copyright line on Trainers).
  • Non-English cards. A German or French 1st Edition card has a stamp and a shadow. That’s normal, and it isn’t a “Shadowless” card.
  • Reprints. Celebrations (2021) and 30th Celebration Classic Collection reprints lack the Wizards of the Coast copyright line. Base Set 2 is numbered /130.
  • Worn shadows. Heavy edge wear or holo scratches can make a shadow hard to see. Use the text-weight check as a second opinion.

Does Shadowless matter for value?

Usually, for holos. Example: Charizard #4 Shadowless PSA 9 copies sold for $8,100–$12,995 (May 14–Sep 22, 2026), versus $3,096–$4,050 for Unlimited PSA 9s (Aug 24–Sep 29, 2026) (PriceCharting Shadowless, Unlimited, accessed 2026-10-07). Commons and uncommons carry much smaller premiums in dollar terms. Check sold listings for your exact card and grade; these are past sales, not forecasts. All 16 holos: Base Set holos value.

FAQ

Is Shadowless the same as 1st Edition? No. It uses the same layout and thin text, but it has no 1st Edition stamp.

Do graders label Shadowless? Yes. PSA, CGC and other graders note “Shadowless” on the label when they attribute it. For a valuable card, letting a grader attribute it is the safest check.

My Machamp has a stamp and a shadow. Is it fake? Not because of that. Stamped, shadowed English Machamps came from later 2-Player Starter Set printings (see check 6).
