Pokémon Fossil Checklist: All 62 Cards With Rarities, Known Errors and Holo Guide Values
All 62 English Pokémon Fossil cards with numbers, types, stages and rarities, plus well-known errors and dated holo guide values. Cross-checked.
Quick answer: Fossil was the third English Pokémon set, after Base Set and Jungle. It was released on October 10, 1999 with 62 cards (Bulbapedia; Pokémon TCG Data; both accessed 2026-10-07). The Japanese original, Mystery of the Fossils (June 21, 1997), had 48 cards. As with Jungle, the English set adds a non-holo version of each holo rare.

Print runs and holo pattern
Fossil was printed in a 1st Edition run, with the black “Edition 1” stamp, and then an Unlimited run with no stamp (Bulbapedia 1st Edition, accessed 2026-10-07). Bulbapedia says Fossil was the last set to use the “Starlight” holofoil pattern before Base Set 2 switched to the “cosmos” pattern, although cosmos-pattern Fossil holos have been reported. It also notes that the Australian Unlimited print used red “Pokémon” lettering on its packaging to deter counterfeits (Bulbapedia Fossil, accessed 2026-10-07).
The theme decks built around Fossil were BodyGuard and LockDown (Bulbapedia).
Known errors worth checking
All from Bulbapedia’s error card list, accessed 2026-10-07. Most are small, and some are on every copy, so they don’t add value.
- Haunter #6, “Blue Stain Haunter”: a large number of Unlimited holos have a blue ink stain near Haunter’s hand, from heavy to faint. Bulbapedia calls it one of the best-known Wizards-era ink stains.
- Hitmonlee #7, “Stainmonlee”: some 1st Edition holos have gold border-ink stains down the left side.
- Zapdos #15: every 1st Edition holo, and part of the Unlimited run, has a non-holo patch at the top left of the art where an evolution box would go. Bulbapedia says neither version is rare.
- Krabby #51, “Fossil Slash Krabby”: some Unlimited copies have an incomplete set symbol.
- Slowpoke #55: the illustrator Miki Tanaka is credited as “Miki Takano” on 1st Edition and Unlimited copies. Bulbapedia says it was fixed on the later print with a 1999-2000 copyright line.
- Gengar #5: a few holos have a yellow ink spot on the back, at the top of the “MO” in POKÉMON.
Unlike Jungle, Fossil has no set-wide “no symbol” holo run. See the Jungle no-symbol error for that one.
Holo guide values (PriceCharting, Oct 7, 2026)
PriceCharting’s Unlimited holo guide values on Oct 7, 2026 ranged from about $7 to $100 ungraded and about $530 to $12,800 in PSA 10. Gengar was highest ungraded, and Dragonite was highest in PSA 10 (PriceCharting Fossil, accessed 2026-10-07).
| Card | Ungraded | “Grade 9” (blended) | PSA 10 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gengar #5 | $100.00 | $905.68 | $3,202.95 |
| Dragonite #4 | $99.00 | $688.00 | $12,800.00 |
| Moltres #12 | $38.05 | $157.64 | $1,327.15 |
| Lapras #10 | $13.81 | $175.51 | $4,250.00 |
| Muk #13 | $6.81 | $53.00 | $532.09 |
These are PriceCharting’s guide values, calculated from recent sales, not individual sales. “Grade 9” blends graders. A PSA 10 figure can rest on very few sales. 1st Edition values aren’t included; PriceCharting’s 1st Edition Fossil page didn’t load for us on 2026-10-07.
FAQ
How many cards are in Pokémon Fossil? 62: 15 holo rares, 15 non-holo rares, 15 uncommons, 12 commons and 5 Trainers.
Is there a Fossil secret rare? No. Every card is numbered out of 62.
Is a Fossil card with a 1999-2000 copyright line a fake? Not necessarily. Bulbapedia lists three genuine sources of 1999-2000 copies. Non-holos from Australian red-logo Unlimited packs carry that line. Zapdos #15 (in a cosmos holo), Raichu #29, Golduck #35 and Psyduck #53 came that way in the Thunderstorm Gift Box. And the later print that fixed the Slowpoke credit has it too (Bulbapedia Fossil, accessed 2026-10-07). Compare the rest of the card with a known genuine copy before deciding.
Should I grade my Fossil holo? Only clean holos usually justify the fee. Compare the fee with the gap between ungraded and graded values, then see should I grade my card?
